Been Identified as the King of GH-Rap and an African Hip-Hop Star. He goes by the birth name Desmond Kwesi Blackmore , better known in showbiz circles as as D-Black. One of the best African Hip-Hop Artistes among the few from Ghana.
D-black is a music business entrepreneur /executive producer and English language spitting Hip hop artist from Ghana. Love’s hearing good music and making great music. He runs his own marketing / advertising firm called “Black Avenue Works” that specializes in corporate & product advertising and marketing as well as corporate & social events. There’s a subsidiary of Black Avenue Works called Black Avenue Muzik. Black Avenue Muzik is an Indie Record Label and Distribution outlet in Ghana. I want to be able to put Ghanaian hip-hop music on the continental / international platform so the whole of Africa and the world can appreciate and have access to the music we make out here , D-Black says.
He reps the Peer Pressure crew out here that’s made up of like-minded individuals that share the same goals and vision. Peer Pressure is made up of mostly entertainment industry persons and is focused on liasoning with the youth through events, music and social work.
D-Black is all set to release his debut solo album titled 'Music, Love & Life' in August/September 2010 on his Black Avenue Muzik Label & Distribution Outlet in collaboration with Peer Pressure and Nigerian based label ‘Storm Records’ which is the home for Nigerian artists Naeto C, Sauce Kid and Sasha.
A track off the album titled ‘Asabone ft. Reggie Rockstone’ leaked out earlier than expected in January in Ghana.
The Album’s first single / video titled ‘Somebody’ was officially released in June 2010 and premiered as an EXCLUSIVE on MTV NETWORKS all around Africa. The song “Somebody” made it into the Ghanaian top 10 Charts on 9 Radio stations barely 3 weeks after it’s release.
BRIEF HISTORY
D-Black da Ghana Bwouy has since December 2008 dropped three major singles from his joint album ‘Target Practice’ with ex-big brother Africa housemate, Kwaku-T. The self executive produced album which was marketed by D-Black’s Black Avenue Works firm boasted the singles “Move” which was nominated in the Best West African Category at the last Channel O Music Awards in South Africa, “Breathe” ft.Jay So and “Bust ma brain” respectively. This is album is hands down the most successful pure hiphop Album in the country till date. Rapping in only the English dialect; the D-Black and Kwaku-t duo were the first and only hiphop artists to be nominated for a Ghana Music Award in it’s eleven year history, rapping in English, with their music Video ‘Breathe’ directed by Gyo of Phamous Philms winning the Best Video of the Year Award 2010 and nominated for Best Hiphop song of the Year. His award winning video ‘Breathe’ was also nominated for Best African Video at the Museke Africa Music Awards 2010.
He flies solo this time with a 21-track album with music he has written and recorded surrounding his life’s experiences and the music he loves hence the album’s title “Music , Love & Life. “This album should last me a while cos i wanna contribute to the wrapping up of albums from my labels Artists ; RNB/Soul singer, producer, instrumentalist ; Sammi Blacc and 17 year old new age m.c ; Dee-Money”, says D-black.
“Music is the first love of my life and this album is music from the heart, mind and soul,” D-Black says. I believe in African unity and collaborations so this album has a lot of collabo’s with artists from around the world.
D-Black features on this album, Wyclef Jean,Memphis Bleek,HHP, (South Africa), Tay Grin (Malawi),Segal (Gabon),Buffalo Souljah (Zimbabwe), STL (Kenya), 2 Face Idibia ,Sauce Kid ,M.I & J Martins (Nigeria), Reggie Rockstone, Kwaw Kese , X.O, Ayigbe Edem, Tinny, Sarkodie, Stonebwouy, Efya, Samini and Kwabena Kwabena(Ghana).
With prominent producers like Bad boy Entertainment’s Coptic, Kwam1, Piesie , Killmatic ,Jay Sleek (Nigeria), Sammi Blacc, Jay So, M.A. ,Q.C Funk, Lil Shaker, Female producer ; Chantelle Myers , Green Gaffacci , Dr.EL, Jounide and Waxi of Sound Republic working on the album’s production.
Having just been appointed United Nations (U.N) Celebrity Ambassador in Ghana in December 2009; D-Black collaborates with 2 face Idibia (Nigeria), J-town and Kwaku-t on “STOP IT” ; a song delved around the realization of the United Nations Millennium Developmental Goals. HIV/AIDS awareness, Poverty and Domestic Violence/Women Empowerment.
D-Black sees this song as his message to society, Ghanaians ,Africans and the world as a whole. He says “Joint efforts like this make the world a better place to live in”.
The Channel O 2009 Music Video Awards Nominee, Ghana Music Awards 2010 nominee and winner, 2010 Museke African Music Awards nominee has graced / performed on stages with a number of international acts .He’s performed with the likes of Jay-z, Fat Joe, Busta Rhymes ,Omarion,Ja Rule ,U.K Based ; Sway, Donaeo, Lethal B, Stevie Wonder and more in his brief musical career. Promotion of his Target Practice Album with Kwaku-t in 2009 saw him perform in South Africa and in Nigeria also.
D-Black’s album promises to be a face lift for Ghanaian hiphop music on the international scene and his music is a fusion of his lyrical dexterity, right choice of beats and concepts, his life experiences and train of thought. D-Black raps mainly in the English language mixed with Pidgin English.
D-Black went on tour South Africa during the 2010 World Cup with other Ghanaian artists and other musicians from Africa. Promoting his new Singles ‘SOMEBODY’ and ‘GET ON THE DANCEFLOOR’ for the World and African Audience.
The extremely industrious C.E.O of Ghanaian based Record Label / Marketing & Distribution firm Black Avenue Muzik/ Works is an artist/ rapper and also just graduated from the University of Ghana, Legon this year where he studied Theatre Arts/ Film Directing and Music.
He’s acted in t.v series “All that Glitters” and “Home Sweet Home” and is also set to begin filming this first ever Movie “7 P.M” written by Jounide El- Mahmoud, next year.
A Reality Show titled “The Life & Rhymes Of D-Black & Kwaku-t” is also in the works.
