The six greatest South African diss songs

13 August 2018
Beef is not JUST a hip-hop thing. These South African beefs birthed some really great songs.
When it comes to beef, you can rest assured South African artists can BRING it. Here are some of the better songs/verses that have come out from our artists hating on each other.

1. TKZee -  Masimbela
Aimed at: Mdu
There's always going to be bad blood between people during 'break ups'. This was the case when Magesh was kicked out of Mashamplani. It all started with Mdu's then group Mashamplani taking a dig at Tokollo who, in-turn, rallied up Kabelo and Zwai to drop this scorcher with a hook taken from a traditional sotho track.

2. Cassper Nyovest Ft. Riky Rick - Le Mpitse
Aimed at: Tumi (well, Riky's verse)
It seems like a distant lifetime ago but there was a time when Riky was signed to Motif. A great time for the label if you think about it, considering that Reason was also part of the stable. Things turned sour very quickly though when Riky parted ways with the Motif because of creative differences.

3. AKA - Composure
Aimed at: Cassper Nyovest
This one is pretty straight forward though. This song was a sleeper which eventually got its due. Its release was well timed but it concentrated on one person in particular. Refiloe. The crazy thing is that the song became an absolute club-banger and people went crazy every time AKA performs it live.

4. Brenda Fassie - Ama-gents
Aimed at: Senyaka
You can't be the Queen and then expect people to not take shots at ya! And Senyaka sure did. This is probably South Africa's widest generated diss track mainly because every song the Queen of Pop did kinda became a national anthem.
5. Riky Rick Ft. A-Reece - Pick You Up
Aimed at: Ambitiouz Entertainment
When Fifi Cooper, Benchmarq and A-Reece left Ambitiouz Entertainment it raised a lot of brows. People started questioning whether the artists could survive post-Ambitiouz and their money fueled promos and music videos. One artist proved that he could: A-Reece. He's maintained a consistent in the sight of all the hate from his former label (who we're guessing urged their new artist Kid Tini to do this).

6. Mzekezeke - Ub'dadada
Aimed at: Sbu

Considered to be one of the best kwaito diss tracks in the history of the genre, masked musician, Mzekezeke, went off on kwaito star, Sbu, when he released the diss track Ub'dadada.  The song was so brutal we hardly recall Sbu replying with his own diss song. Ub'dadada was probably the final nail in the coffin when it came to Sbu's kwaito career.
