Episode 3 of the new series will follow former VJ search winner Sizwe Dhlomo as he introduces the best and worst of the contenders who queued in their thousands to get a chance at the Jo’burg auditions earlier in July.
With the national callbacks of the nationwide talent search just a week away, the Jo’burg candidates are prepared to pull out all the stops to make it through to the next stage. Twenty slots are up for grabs so there’s everything to play for and nothing to lose!
The ultimate winner in the MTV Base VJ Search will win a life-changing job and become MTV Base’s first new South African VJ since 2006 – hosting their own show on MTV Base and featuring on Club 808, e.tv’s top music programme.
Among the contestants looking for their chance in the limelight this week are aspiring tattoo artist Rox Robertson (22), actress Mmathapelo Moagi (25), copywriter Itumeleng Modise (22) and Linda Sifumba (22).
Last week’s episode saw 10 Durban finalists win through to the next stage including Scelo Gumede, a 25 year old media and communications student at UNISA who made it third time lucky after auditioning for two previous MTV Base VJ searches. Identical twins, Precious and Pretty Zondo (20) also made it through. Precious is studying cost management accounting while her sister is a catering management student. Commented Pretty, "When we got here our line was ‘makubenjalo’ which means ‘let it be so’; that's what kept us going throughout the audition and that's how we made it through."
Twenty year old Zintle Gama has always done everything with her stepsister Hazel, including studying at the University of Johannesburg and setting up their own fashion label, Mooir Couture. Both girls auditioned together but only Zintle made the cut, so now she’s off to Jo’burg on her own. A wistful Zintle stated, "We've never done anything apart before; I guess it's part of growing up."
The other Durban finalists through to the next stage include: UCT accountancy student Nomzamo Mbatha (22); UCT film and media student Lungelo Dlamini (18); model and part-time UNISA communications science student Talia-Ann Tifflin (22) and IMM student Linda Mtoba (20). Brother and sister Mthoko (22) and Ntombi Mkhathini (23) auditioned and qualified together – he’s a graphic design student at the Durban Institute of Technology, a dancer, rapper and self-described “free spirit”, while she's studying business admin at CIT college and is a freelance stylist at Jenni Button. Ntombi said, "MTV Base is the coolest and most iconic brand; this is such a massive opportunity!"
They join Cape Town finalists Lerato Stevens (20, Graeme Cuthberths (25), Roxanne Kalie (22), Sherlin Barends (22), Khaya Siyengo (24), Vennessa Gagu (19), Tony-Leigh Louw (24), Ghislaine Mutombo (24), Tsidiso Motsoahae (20) and Mandy Sithole (25) for the national callback auditions (to be aired in episode 4 next week).
