Sweet like Shuga?

30 October 2013
Nigerian chart toppers and music authorities Flavour, Sound Sultan, Chidinma and Kcee are collaborating with South African kwaito star Professor on the title track for Shuga (series 3), the hotly-anticipated sex-and-relationships drama that premieres in Nigeria on 1 December (MTV Base, DStv Channel 322).

The upbeat Afro-Pop song for the new series of Shuga has been co-written by the artists and Del B, who is also producing the track.

The song, titled ‘Sweet Like Shuga”, is about the temptations faced by young people and echoes some of the key storylines in the Shuga TV series, which finds its key cast members engaging in a whole range of risky behaviours from multiple sexual partners to unprotected sex, teenage pregnancy, gender based violence and failing to disclose their HIV status.

MTV Base has commissioned celebrated Nigerian music video director Clarence Peters to create the music video for “Sweet Like Shuga”, which will premiere exclusively on Spanking New on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) in mid-November.  The track will also be available to download free on the Shuga website at www.shuga.tv and on leading music download sites.

Shuga is an award winning sex and relationships drama and multimedia campaign designed to combat a lack of awareness and misinformation about HIV, sexual responsibility and teen pregnancy among Nigerian youth, the award winning TV series and multimedia campaign is produced by MTV Base and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation in collaboration with NACA, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund).  PEPFAR (The US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) has also expressed a commitment to join forces with the campaign.

Fusing sexual health messaging with gripping storylines, Shuga aims to raise awareness about HIV prevention and teen pregnancy in Nigeria, as well as other public health issues affecting young people including living with HIV; disclosing your status; getting tested; condom use; gender based violence; gender equality; women’s empowerment; family planning; transactional sex; multiple concurrent partners; stigma and discrimination of people living with HIV; and parent/child communication.

Shuga stars Maria Okanrende, Tiwa Savage, Okezie Morro, Chris Attoh, Emmanuel Ikubese, Nick Mutuma, Dorcas Shola Fapson, Leonora Okine, Sharon Chisom Ezeamaka, James Timini Egbuson, Kachi Nnochiri, Olumide Oworu, Ugbeye Owumi Sani Mu’azu, Bikiya Graham-Douglas, KC Ejelonu, Efa Iwara, Silo Emem Bankole and Charles Ukpong.   BET Award winner Ice Prince and “Kukere” star Iyanya are both playing cameo roles in Shuga, as are MTV VJ Ehis Okoeguale and Don Flexy.
